Child of Former South African Leader Jacob Zuma Refutes Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Begins
The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of the city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she made on online platforms in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.
A seven-day period of anarchy in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been accused of fuelling this unrest and is charged with accusations of encouragement to commit terror acts and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The demonstrations were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the previous president's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into accusations of impropriety while he was in power.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always denied the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past calling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her dad after he founded his own party and ran against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related harassment" against the ex-leader and his family.
A small number of backers from her party, the political party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and does not have substantial grounds for a conviction.
