Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Dispute

The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or security roles.

"Like us, you all took an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The recorded statement seemed to prompt a heated reply from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials React

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme online messages and retract his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.

Officials' Firm Answer

The officials who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and swore an pledge to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the national charter and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "Every American must unite and denounce the former president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

More Governmental Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."

He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and without qualification."

The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."

White House Statement

During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the official said. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
